In the clash of the event, with less than five minutes remaining, the 2014 ASP World Tour champion rode a smaller inside wave without priority, rapped three turns to land a 7.17 and the win over Slater. “That was pretty close. It was a tough heat against Kelly, I knew it was going to be hard. I’m stoked to be in the quarters; it’s a tough event, and I’m looking for a solid result here,” said Gabriel Medina, who won six out of 11 heats against the Floridian.
