PIPPI BEACH, YAMBA (Sunday, 22 March 2015): The final event on the inaugural Subway® Summer Surf Series wrapped up in challenging two-to-three foot conditions and cyclonic weather at Pippi Beach, Yamba today. In the Under-16 Boys division, Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) proved to be the one to beat early after throwing down multiple high-scoring waves in his early heats. The Lennox Head surfer peaked in the final when he locked in a solid 14.73 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) to take the win away from Max Kearny (Tugan, Qld), Liam O’Brien (Benowa, Qld) and Luke Condon (Lennox Head, NSW) who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.Kiani Dobbyn (Palm Beach, Qld) took the Under-16 Girls title back to Queensland, dominating the division. The natural-footer threw down an array of turns on left and righthanders to get a convincing victory. Fellow Queenslander Ebony Wilson (Elanora, Qld) put on a solid display of power surfing, but ultimately fell short and failed to post the score required to take the win.Local surfer Jake Thompson (Yamba, NSW) matched fellow local Jeames Young’s day one feats taking out the Under-21 Mens division. Thompson performed a barrage of aerial manoeuvres to notch up a 11.13 heat total and take the win ahead of Jake Snellgrove (Lennox Head, NSW) who finished in the runner-up spot.Despite finishing in the runner-up position in the Under-16 Girls, Ebony Wilson showed she had the skills to match it with her elders, taking out Under-21 Girls. Wilson successfully negotiated the tricky lineup to post an 11.80 heat total and take the win ahead of Kira-Lee O’Connor. The main base for event 13 of the Subway® Summer Surf Series was Yamba Main Beach, Pippies and Turners.Participants competed for the chance to attend a three-day Subway® Surf Camp at the renowned Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina. The camp, conducted by Australia’s leading surf coaches, will provide participants with the guidance and training they need to make the transition from surfer to professional athlete.Organised by Surfing Australia and proudly supported by Billabong, the Subway® Summer Surf Series was held around Australia this summer with New South Wales hosting five of the 13 events. Each event attracted as many as 100 surfers. The new series was created to fill a competition void, which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers. It represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program, onto the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, into the Subway® Summer Surf Series, followed by the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle. The aim of the Subway® Summer Surf Series is to help young Australians continue to develop their passion for surfing, whether it be professionally or recreationally and carry on to enjoy a lifetime of surfing.Ambassadors for the Subway® Summer Surf Series are ASP World Tour competitor and 2012 World Champion Joel Parkinson and leading ASP World Tour female competitor Laura Enever.RESULTS:Under-16 Boys1 – Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW)2 – Max Kearney (Tugan, Qld)3 – Liam O’Brien (Benowa, Qld)4 – Luke Condon (Lennox Head, NSW)Under-16 Girls1 – Kiani Dobbyn (Palm Beach, Qld)2 – Ebony Wilson (Elanora, Qld)3 – Sophia Fulton (Morriset, NSW)4 – Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld)Under-21 Boys1 – Jake Thompson (Yamba, NSW)2 – Jake Snellgrove (Lennox Head, NSW)3 – Harrison Fulton (Morriset, NSW)4 – Blake Ghanimeh (Skennars Head, NSW)Under-21 Girls1 – Ebony Wilson (Elanora, Qld)2 – Kira-Lee O’Connor (Kingscliff, NSW)3 – Ebony Santamaria (Lennox Head, NSW)4 – Danielle Hancock (Nords Wharf, NSW)SUBWAY® SUMMER SURF SERIES EVENT CALENDAR – 2014/15:EVENT 1 – Dee Why, NSW – September 13-14, 2014EVENT 2 – Newcastle Beach, NSW – September 27 – 28, 2014EVENT 3 – Sunshine Coast, QLD – October 25 – 26, 2014EVENT 4 – Torquay, VIC – November 1 – 2, 2014EVENT 5 – Kiama, NSW – November 22-23, 2014EVENT 6 – Clifton, TAS – December 13, 2014EVENT 7 – Gold Coast, QLD – January 3 – 4, 2015EVENT 8 – Phillip Island, VIC – January 17 -18, 2015EVENT 9 – Margaret River, WA – January 31 – February 1, 2015EVENT 10 – Victor Harbor, SA – February 14 – 15, 2015EVENT 11 – Cronulla, NSW – March 7 – 8, 2015EVENT 12 – Trigg, WA – March 14 -15, 2015EVENT 13 – Yamba, NSW – March 21 – 22, 2015
