The 16 & Under boys division was the final heat of the day and was by far the most exciting, with just .14 of a point separating first and third place. In the end it was thirteen-year old Joe van Dijk (Phillip Island, VIC) who took a come from behind victory, locking in a 5.67 on his last wave. van Dijk’s two wave score was 11.74 (out of a possible 20), narrowly snaring the title from Kelly Norris (Coolum Beach, QLD) 11.60.

Rounding out the final was Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD) and Kip Caddy (Lake Tabourie, NSW) in third and fourth place respectively.

In the 16 & Under girls division, Naomi McCarthy (Palm Beach, QLD) was dominant throughout. McCarthy posted an excellent 8 point ride (out of a possible 10) at the beginning of the final and continued to impress the judges, locking in 4.57 for a series of critical backhand maneuvers to seal the win. Finishing in second position was Sophia Bernard (Manly, NSW). Sandy Point’s Kelly Laity was unable to find the long open faced rides she required and placed third. Finishing in fourth position was Coco Beeby (Scotts Head, NSW).
