The Boys from Brazil

Meet the Brazilians

They’re quickly becoming the hottest surfers around, and in the last three events of the ASP World Tour, the Brazilians have dominated. Adriano De Souza recently nabbed the Rip Curl Pro in Portugal and Gabriel Medina won both the Quiksilver Pro France and the Rip Curl Pro Search in San Francisco.  Touring alongside De Souza and Medina are countrymen Miguel Pupo, Jadson André, Alejo Muniz, Heitor Alves and Raoni Monteiro – five of them hold spots in the top 25 World Rankings. When one of them win, it’s a win for their country.

Known for their airs and abilities to set their fins free, occassionally the Brazilian contingent does some work on the open face. Pupo, throwing down an impressive turn.

These new generation of Brazilian surfers started to make news some years back, and while considered newcomers – they have harnessed an innovative style, with aerial tricks regularly on display and having easily tamed the likes of the Pipeline and Teahupoo. Brazilians now make up more than twenty percent of the surfers on tour.

Its’ now becoming clear that while powerhouse surfers usually hail form the likes of the U.S, Australia and  South Africa – it’s a harbinger that the Brazilians are indeed on the way… ‘and they’re hungry’.

Gabriel Medina had this to say fresh off his win in San Francisco.

It’s been amazing to be a part of, we are all just pushing each other to do go. Brazil has never won a world title, and we all want is to make our country proud and finally bring it home.
