The 2015 Vans US Open of Surfing is officially on. There were big scores and a few upsets in the first day of competition, held in three-to-four foot (1 metre) surf at Huntington Beach. Patrick Gudauskas scored the day’s highest heat total of 16.36 and won his heat. He managed to outcome a dangerous Championship Tour surfer, Italo Ferreira. “The sandbars are super fun right now, so it’s been a real pleasure. It’s really good on these rights when the wind blows up the face,” said Gudauskas.
