The latest leg of the Subway® Summer Surf Series got underway in solid and tricky six foot waves at North Cronulla today.Kai Warner (North Narrabeen, NSW) managed to find multiple long righthanders in the Under-18 Boys to notch up a respectable heat total of 12.10 (out of a possible 20 points). The Northern Beaches natural-footer seemed to discover several diamonds in the rough to move past his fellow competitors and into the quarterfinals.Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW) posted the highest single wave score of the day, locking in an 8.83 (out of a possible ten points) in the Under-18 Boys. The North Coast natural-footer effortlessly linked together a chain of powerful turns to lock in the score. As a result, Chris has booked his spot into tomorrow’s quarterfinals. Chris also took out the day one Expression Session for a handful of massive aerial manoeuvres.Jared Hickel (Cronulla, NSW), Ben Hucker (Long Jetty, NSW), Ryan Slattery (Toukley, NSW), Dylan Rodgers (Shell Cove, NSW), Luke Wrice (Bulli, NSW) and Harley Ross-Webster (Curl Curl, NSW) also all claimed wins in the Under-18 Boys.Darcy Crump (Avalon, NSW) claimed a solid win in the Under-16 Boys, unleashing a flurry of furious turns to post a respectable heat total of 13.67. As a result Darcy cemented his position in the quarterfinals.Luke Wrice (Bulli, NSW) backed up his first round win in the Under-18 Boys, with another win in the Under-16 Boys. The Illawarra natural-footer made light work of the tricky conditions to post a heat total of 14.43.Sam Taylor (Palm Beach, NSW), Dylan Moffat (Narrabeen, NSW), Eddy Hamaty, Marlon Newling (Avalon, NSW), Jackson Roberts (Bateau Bay, NSW) and Sandon Whittaker (Avoca, NSW) were also victorious in their first round heats in the Under-16 Boys.Alysse Cooper (Queenscliff, NSW), Rubie Reents (Narrawallee, NSW) and Eliza Greene (Manly) all managed to take first round wins in the first round of the Under-18 Girls. All three will battle it out in the semi-finals tomorrow.Day two of the Subway® Summer Surf Series is expected to resume tomorrow at 7.30am.The main base for event eleven of the Subway® Summer Surf Series is North Cronulla, with back-up locations of Elouera, Wanda, South Cronulla and Sandshoes.All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.Organised by Surfing Australia and proudly supported by Billabong, the 13-event series will be held around Australia this summer showcasing the country’s best male and female surfers in the under 16 and 18 age divisions. Each event is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers vying for the top honour.The new series was created to fill a competition void which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers. It represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program, onto the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, into the Subway® Summer Surf Series, followed by the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle.The Subway® Summer Surf Series will help young Australians continue to develop their passion for surfing, whether it be professionally or recreationally and carry on to enjoy a lifetime of surfing.Ambassadors for the Subway® Summer Surf Series are ASP World Tour competitor and 2012 World Champion Joel Parkinson and leading ASP World Tour female competitor Laura Enever.The male and female winners from the U/18 divisions of each event in the series will be invited to attend a three-day Subway® Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina.
