The first day of competition at the 2016 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach had six heats. Davey Cathels and Kanoa Igarashi won their Round 1 clashes. Cathels opened the event with a surprising performance in the long and perfect Australian right-handers. Igarashi followed with a competent approach in the three-to-five-foot surf. “The last time I was here was four years ago, and I broke my leg. I have only been here for about four to five days, but I am around really good friends. I feel super comfortable and know exactly which waves I want because I have such good people around me,” explained Kanoa.
