Garrett McNamara Sets Big Wave Record

With all the commotion surrounding Kelly Slater‘s ASP crown snafu now over, it’s time to report some news concerning big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara.

Reports are coming in that he has broken the record for the biggest wave ever ridden, near the ASP World Tour site of Peniche, Portugal. This feat would then dwarf the 70-footer Mike Parson‘s took on at Cortes Bank in 2008 or Ken Bradshaw‘s 1998 wave at Outer Log Cabins estimated to be at 80 feet.

Conquering a 100 foot wave is the goal of the big wave community, if McNamara’s wave is in fact 90-feet, not only has he set a record – but has put the elusive 10 story wave in his sights. The evidence is based on this news video, though no official photo or word from the McNamara camp – so check it out and see what you think.

Via Twitter, Kelly Slater wrote:

I just saw a shot of Garrett McNamara from Portugal on a stupidly big wave. He should post that thing ASAP. Looks like huge Jaws.
